14 Month Old Baby

14 Month Old Baby

You can feel your face flushing red while the whole supermarket is looking at your screaming 14 month old baby. He or she is throwing temper tantrum because you do not want to give in to his or her demands. At this age, no is the last thing your baby wants to hear and will try to make you to do what he or she wants to do by all means. However, your 14 months old baby is not making you embarrassed intentionally nor is using temper tantrum to get what he or she wants. Despite that you will need to figure out how deal with your baby’s frustrations when he or she cannot have it his or her way.

What To Expect:
At 14 months of age, your baby is not able to understand why you do not want to buy that great toy at the supermarket and much less to understand your feelings. These social skills are developed over time which, however, does not make it any easier when your baby is screaming and yelling in the supermarket. A 14 months old baby is too young for a time out and much less for disciplining but it is crucial to start setting limits and be consistent (the same counts for your partner). Be calm and patient because your baby will not easily accept “the rules“. Exploration of the house and new things will be the main “job“ of your baby at this age which means that he or she will try to push the boundaries of the “known“ world. For that reason you can expect protests and possibly also temper tantrums when he or she is not allowed to push that boundary. To make your own and your baby’s live easier, it is a good idea to keep the “forbidden“ objects not only out of reach but out of sight too and avoid situations that could trigger temper tantrums such as supermarkets for a certain time. If your baby still is not eating with a spoon on his or her own, now is the time to start teaching him or her doing so. Do not expect adult manners when eating though because 14 month-olds are messy eaters. Also, do not be surprised if your baby refuses to accept new foods. Keep on trying because he or she will accept them eventually. Do not force him or her to eat and be sure to turn off the TV, and take away the toys and similar things that could distract your baby while eating.

What You Need To Know:
Although your baby may refuse to taste a new foods, he or she does not have any second thoughts when it comes to tasting the objects found on the floor, your kitchen cabinets, in the park, etc. even if they are dirty. Keep a close eye on your baby when he or she is outside for instance because some germs can be very dangerous for your baby. However, avoid the temptation to keep him or her in a sterile environment because his or her immune system needs to adjust being exposed to various microorganisms.
